Three-Sided Direct Vent Gas Heat with Push-Button Convenience

The Bristol (Model 8764) is a freestanding direct vent gas stove with a three-sided fire view, a cast-iron heat exchanger, and a maximum input of 26,500 BTU/hr.

Key Features

  • Three-sided view of the fire — HearthStone describes the Bristol as offering a beautiful 3-sided view of the fire, with the quality of the appliance displayed in the intricate details of the cast iron.
  • SIT 821 gas system with 7-day pilot timeout — the current owner's manual states that the automatic timer shuts the pilot off after 7 days of inactivity. HearthStone presents this as meeting newer safety standards.
  • 26,500 BTU/hr maximum input — on natural gas and on propane. Minimum input is 15,000 BTU/hr on natural gas and 14,000 BTU/hr on propane.
  • Heats up to 1,400 sq. ft. — per current HearthStone consumer information. Actual heated area depends on layout, insulation, and climate.
  • Cast-iron heat exchanger — HearthStone states that all Traditions Family gas stoves incorporate a cast-iron heat exchanger, and that air flows through the heat exchanger to circulate more heat from the stove into the home.
  • Ships configured for natural gas with an LP conversion kit included — the certified LP conversion kit (97-56641) is packed with the appliance and must be installed by a qualified installer for propane operation.
  • Pan burner with a 4-piece decorative ceramic log set — supplied with Platinum Bright Embers and ceramic nuggets.
  • Integral safety barrier screen — HearthStone describes each window into the fire as protected by a nearly invisible screen, seamlessly integrated into the stove.
  • Top-vent 4" × 6-5/8" direct vent — vertical and horizontal terminations are both permitted, within the limits published in the current manual.
  • Approved for mobile home installation — per the current Model 8764 manual, where not prohibited by local codes.

Product Features

Three-Sided Fire View

The Bristol presents the fire through glass on three sides. HearthStone's current product information describes a beautiful 3-sided view of the fire, careful craftsmanship and reliable technology, with the quality of the product displayed in the intricate details of the cast iron and the warm flickering glow of the fire. Each viewing window is fitted with an integral safety barrier screen.

SIT 821 Gas Control with 7-Day Pilot Timeout

The Bristol uses a SIT 821 gas valve. It is a millivolt system: the pilot flame heats a thermopile, which generates the millivoltage that powers the gas control valve. The pilot itself is lit with the appliance's continuous sparker rather than a match. The current manual states that the appliance has a 7-day time-out pilot assembly and that the automatic timer shuts the pilot off after 7 days of inactivity. The manual instructs that the 7-day timer system must not be defeated. This is not a conventional pilot that burns indefinitely without regard to use.

Natural Gas with Included LP Conversion Kit

The Bristol ships configured for natural gas. A certified LP conversion kit, part 97-56641, is included with the appliance and is required for propane operation. Conversion must be carried out by a qualified installer following the current manual. The appliance operates on one fuel at a time; it is not a dual-fuel appliance. The appliance is equipped for use at 0 to 2,000 ft altitude.

Cast-Iron Construction and Heat Exchanger

HearthStone states that all Traditions Family gas stoves incorporate a cast-iron heat exchanger, and that air flows through the heat exchanger to circulate more heat from the stove into the home rather than up the chimney. The Bristol is offered in Matte Black, Brown Enamel and Basil Enamel.

Pan Burner and Ceramic Log Set

The current HearthStone product information identifies the Bristol's burner as a Pan Burner. HearthStone's technical resource page for Model 8764 describes it as a stainless steel burner; the current manual's parts list calls it a steel burner. The appliance is supplied with a 4-piece decorative ceramic log set, a bag of Platinum Bright Embers and a bag of ceramic nuggets. Log, ember and nugget placement must follow the current manual exactly.

Optional Blower and Remote Controls

A convection blower kit (93-57100) is available separately and is not included. The blower assembly includes a rheostat speed control and a snap switch that starts the fan once the stove chassis reaches its preset temperature; it requires a grounded 120V receptacle. Two remote control kits are offered separately: a Programmable Thermostatic Remote (90-56917) and a Thermostatic Remote (90-56914). No remote is included with the appliance. The standard appliance can also be operated from its own ON/OFF/T-STAT control or from a wall-mounted 750-millivolt thermostat, which is not supplied with the appliance.

Direct Vent Installation

The Bristol is a direct vent appliance using 4" × 6-5/8" coaxial pipe with a top vent connection. It may be terminated vertically through the roof or horizontally through a wall, within the limits published in the current manual, and it may not share a vent with any other appliance. The current manual also permits approved direct vent chimney conversion methods in a lined masonry chimney or in a listed prefabricated solid-fuel chimney, under the manual's own conditions. The manual notes that use of an existing chimney as the air intake is not covered by the ANSI Z21.88 / CSA 2.33-2019 test methods, that this installation was tested and approved by PFS-TECO Laboratories, and that the code authority having jurisdiction must be consulted before proceeding.

Mobile Home Certified

The current Model 8764 manual states that the appliance may be installed in an aftermarket permanently located manufactured home in the United States where not prohibited by local codes, and that the installation must conform to the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standard, Title 24 CFR, Part 3280.

Clearances and Floor Protection

The current Model 8764 manual is the governing source for every clearance and installation requirement. The values below are the published standard appliance clearances.

Clearance Minimum
Side 10"
Rear 2"
Corner 4"

The manual specifies the 4" corner clearance measured from the edge of the top castings to the adjacent wall. Vent pipe clearances are a separate requirement and are not covered by the appliance clearances above: the manual requires 1" to combustibles along vertical runs, 1" below and to the sides of horizontal runs, and 2" above horizontal runs. Where a vent pipe clearance is larger than the appliance clearance at the same point, the vent pipe clearance governs. Mantel and trim clearances are published separately in the manual's clearance figures and must also be satisfied.

Floor protection requirements are as follows.

Floor surface Requirement
Noncombustible surface The appliance may be placed directly on the surface
Wood floor The appliance may be placed directly on the floor
Other combustible surface Install a panel of metal, wood, stone or glass under the appliance, extending the full width and depth of the appliance

The current manual notes that some luxury vinyl plank and luxury vinyl tile products begin to warp at relatively low temperatures, that every installation and flooring specification is different, and that additional shielding may be necessary depending on the flooring used. Check the flooring manufacturer's temperature limits with your installer before installing over vinyl flooring.

Direct Vent Requirements

The Bristol uses a 4" × 6-5/8" direct vent system connected at the top of the appliance. It may not be vented into a shared vent system. The planning limits below come from the current Model 8764 manual; the manual's complete venting instructions, its vent termination clearance figure and its venting termination chart govern the actual installation.

Vertical termination Requirement
Minimum vertical pipe 11 ft
Maximum vertical run 35 ft
Vertical vent restrictor kit Included with the appliance and required for vertical termination
Maximum elbows Two 90-degree elbows or four 45-degree elbows
Termination cap No less than 18" horizontally from any roof or vertical surface
Horizontal termination Requirement
Minimum vertical rise off the appliance 24"
Minimum vertical rise with a 14" or larger snorkel 12"
Minimum horizontal run at minimum rise 9"
Maximum horizontal run at minimum rise 8 ft, with 1/4" of rise for every 12" of horizontal run
Maximum horizontal run with 3 ft of vertical rise 10 ft, with 1/4" of rise for every 12" of horizontal run
Wall pass-through Minimum 10" × 10" framed opening, with 2" minimum clearance maintained at the top

Vent termination clearances to windows, doors, soffits, corners, grade, decks, gas meters and regulators, air inlets and public walkways are published as a lettered figure in the current manual, with separate United States and Canada values for several of them. The manual also sets air restrictor positions by vent configuration; these are installer settings and are made at installation. Your HearthStone installer will select the vent configuration, the restrictor setting and the termination location for your home.
