The Drolet Hunter is a recreational wood heater and cook stove with a 2 ft³ firebox, 20" logs, up to 45,000 BTU/h on dry cordwood, and a 56 lb shipping weight.

Recreational use only: The Hunter is intended for heating and cooking in temporary recreational shelters such as prospectors’ tents, hunting shelters, and ice-fishing shacks. It must not be used for residential heating, in a permanent building, or in a mobile home.

Temporary Recreational Installation Only

The Hunter must not be connected to a hot-air-distribution system, must not be installed in an alcove or a mobile home, and must only be used in a temporary installation. Installation must follow the current manual and the certification label, and suitability depends on the temporary shelter, chimney, air supply, floor protection, and clearances. The user must maintain a permanent combustion-air supply.

Compact Steel Construction

The stove uses a 14-gauge steel body and top, a full steel door with a 9 3/8" x 10 7/8" opening, and an internal steel fire baffle. The official drawing publishes a 12 5/8" body width and a wider maximum cooktop width of 14 3/8"; the 12 5/8" value is the published overall-width specification.

Heating and Cooking Operation

The top cooking surface becomes hot enough for pan cooking. Food should be cooked in a pan and should not be placed directly on the stove top; the manual suggests using a removable stainless-steel surface if cooking directly above the top is desired. Cooking use does not eliminate installation, air-supply, chimney, clearance, or supervision requirements. Wood combustion consumes ambient oxygen, so a constant supply of oxygen through a permanent air intake is mandatory for this appliance; no air-intake kit is included. The manual recommends optional refractory firebrick on the firebox floor, but the Hunter does not come with refractory firebrick.

A chimney, stove connector, draft damper, magnetic thermometer, refractory firebrick, stainless cooking sheet, hearth pad, installation hardware beyond the documented appliance assembly, and installation labor are not included.

Chimney, Connector, and Combustion-Air Requirements

A 6" chimney system is required and is not included, and the connector must follow the pipe manufacturer’s instructions. The manual identifies an 18" standard connector clearance to surrounding combustible material; an insulated connector or an approved thermal shield may be required when the standard pipe clearance cannot be maintained. Connector sections must be secured as instructed, and horizontal connector sections must slope at least 1/4" per foot toward the stove. A barometric draft stabilizer is prohibited, while the model manual recommends a draft damper, sold separately. The appliance must not share an unsuitable vent and must not be connected to a hot-air-distribution system. A constant supply of combustion air through a permanent air intake is mandatory.

Clearances to Combustible Materials

The information on the certification label affixed to the appliance always overrides information published in any other media. The current model manual’s installation table governs the values below.

Floor Protection

The Hunter must be placed on a completely noncombustible surface while maintaining all required clearances. The manual does not publish a separate numeric hearth-extension table for this appliance; follow the current manual and the certification label.
