Classic Cast-Iron Styling with 35,000 BTU Direct Vent Gas Heat

The Champlain (Model 8304) is a freestanding direct vent gas stove with a steel pan burner, a cast-iron heat exchanger, and a maximum input of 35,000 BTU/hr.

Key Features

  • SIT 820 Nova millivolt gas system with a 7-day pilot timeout — the current owner's manual states that the appliance is equipped with a gas valve which will extinguish the pilot light after 7 days of inactivity of the main burner.
  • 35,000 BTU/hr maximum input — on natural gas and on propane. Minimum input is 21,000 BTU/hr on both fuels.
  • Heats up to 1,800 sq. ft. — per current HearthStone consumer information. Actual heated area depends on layout, insulation, and climate.
  • 74.6% steady state efficiency — with a published P.4.1.09 efficiency of 67.9%.
  • Cast-iron heat exchanger — HearthStone states that all of its gas stoves incorporate a cast iron heat exchanger to radiate more heat into the home.
  • Steel pan burner with a six-piece ceramic log set — supplied with a bag of Platinum Bright Embers.
  • Ships configured for natural gas with an LP conversion kit included — the certified LP conversion kit (93-56041) is packed with the appliance and must be installed by a qualified installer for propane operation.
  • Integral safety barrier screen — listed by HearthStone as a standard feature of the appliance, not as an optional accessory.
  • 45° 4" × 6-5/8" direct vent connection — vertical and horizontal terminations are both permitted, within the limits published in the current manual.
  • Approved for mobile home installation — per the current Model 8304 manual, where not prohibited by local codes.

Product Features

Artfully Balanced Fire

HearthStone describes the Champlain as adding a touch of classic style to a room, and states that it has been carefully designed to present a balanced, gently flickering fire on both low and high settings. The fire is viewed through the front glass, which carries an integral safety barrier screen. An adjustable restrictor plate is provided to control excess draft where necessary; the manual notes that adjusting the restrictor also changes the appearance of the flame, and that the plate has a large range of settings.

SIT Nova with 7-Day Pilot Timeout

The Champlain uses a SIT 820 Nova gas control system. It is a millivolt system: the pilot flame heats a thermopile, which generates the 325 to 500 millivolts that power the gas control valve. The pilot itself is lit with the appliance's piezoelectric spark igniter. HearthStone states that the Champlain 8304 maintains a standing pilot which shuts off after 7 days of inactivity, and the current manual states that the gas valve extinguishes the pilot light after 7 days of inactivity of the main burner. This is not a pilot that burns indefinitely without regard to use.

Natural Gas with Included LP Conversion Kit

The Champlain is factory equipped to burn natural gas. A certified LP conversion kit, part 93-56041, is included with the appliance and is required for propane operation. Conversion must be carried out by a qualified installer following the current manual. The appliance operates on one fuel at a time; it is not a dual-fuel appliance. Maximum input is 35,000 BTU/hr on either fuel, and the manual publishes ratings for both the 0 to 2,000 ft and the 2,000 to 4,500 ft altitude ranges. For installations above those ranges the manual directs the installer to consult the local gas distributor or the authority having jurisdiction for proper rating methods.

Steel Pan Burner and Ceramic Log Set

HearthStone's current product information identifies the Champlain's burner as a Pan Burner; the current 2026 catalog calls it a Steel Pan Burner. The appliance is supplied with six decorative ceramic logs in a separate box and a bag of Platinum Bright Embers. Log and ember placement must follow the current manual exactly.

Cast-Iron Heat Exchanger

HearthStone states that all of its gas stoves incorporate a cast iron heat exchanger to radiate more heat into the home. The Champlain is offered in Matte Black, Brown Enamel and Basil Enamel.

Optional Blower and Remote

A convection blower (93-57020) is available separately and is not included with the appliance; the current manual lists the blower among the appliance's features as optional. Two remote control kits are also offered separately: a Thermostatic Remote Control (90-56914), which the manual names as the optional remote control kit, and a Programmable Thermostatic Remote Control (90-56917). No remote is included. The appliance carries a three-way ON / OFF / T-STAT control switch, and the manual describes operation in the T-STAT position with the main burner cycled by a thermostat.

Direct Vent Installation

The Champlain is a direct vent appliance using 4" × 6-5/8" coaxial pipe with a 45° connection at the appliance. It may be terminated vertically through the roof or horizontally through a wall, including with a snorkel termination, within the limits published in the current manual, and it may not share a vent with any other appliance. The manual also describes approved methods for venting through an existing masonry or listed prefabricated chimney using direct vent chimney liner termination, co-linear and co-axial adapter arrangements, under the manual's own conditions. Only vent components from the manufacturers listed in the current manual may be used.

Mobile Home Certified

The current Model 8304 manual states that the appliance may be installed in an aftermarket permanently located manufactured home in the United States where not prohibited by local codes, and references the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standard, Title 24 CFR, Part 3280, together with the Canadian manufactured-home standards printed in the manual.

Made in USA

HearthStone's current gas stove catalog section presents its certified gas-fired direct vent heaters as made in Vermont, and the Model 8304 rating label carries a Made in USA marking. HearthStone states separately that its cast iron parts are produced at its own foundry in Spain.

Available Finishes and Configurations

All three finishes are the same base appliance, Model 8304, and all three ship configured for natural gas with the LP conversion kit included. Pricing varies by finish.

The manual's dimension drawing prints additional references associated with the 45° elbow vent arrangement and notes that it is shown with 45° elbow venting and that dimensions may vary depending on the venting manufacturer. Confirm final dimensions and vent geometry against the current Model 8304 manual before planning an installation.

Clearances and Floor Protection

The current Model 8304 manual is the governing source for every clearance and installation requirement. The values below are the published standard appliance clearances.

Clearance Minimum
Side 2"
Side, with snorkel termination 4"
Rear 3"
Corner 4"
Maximum mantel depth 17"
Horizontal vent to mantel 2" minimum
Top of unit to mantel, snorkel termination 16" minimum

The manual specifies the 4" corner clearance measured from the edge of the firebox to the adjacent wall. The 2" horizontal-vent-to-mantel dimension is a separate vent clearance and is not the same requirement as the 2" appliance side clearance. Vent component clearances, the vent manufacturer's own instructions and local code requirements apply in addition to the appliance clearances above, and where a vent clearance is larger at the same point it governs.

Floor protection requirements are as follows.

Floor surface Requirement
Noncombustible surface The appliance may be placed directly on the surface
Wood floor The appliance may be placed directly on the floor
Other combustible surface Install a panel of metal, wood, stone or glass under the appliance, extending the full width and the full depth of the appliance

The current manual states that luxury vinyl plank and luxury vinyl tile flooring begins to warp at 110 degrees Fahrenheit, and that the minimum required clearance from the front glass of the stove to LVP or LVT flooring is 6". Maintain that 6" minimum and check the flooring manufacturer's temperature limits with your installer before installing over vinyl flooring.

Direct Vent Requirements

The Champlain uses a 4" × 6-5/8" direct vent system connected at 45° at the appliance. It may not be vented into a shared vent system. The planning limits below come from the current Model 8304 manual; the manual's complete venting instructions, its vent termination clearance figure and its venting chart govern the actual installation.

Venting limit Requirement
Maximum system height without offsets 40 ft
Maximum offset 14 ft
Maximum rise to run 1 to 5
Minimum vertical rise, horizontal termination 24"
Horizontal sections 1/4" of rise for every 12" of horizontal run
Each 90° elbow after the second Subtract 5 ft from the allowable horizontal run
Snorkel termination 45" maximum horizontal run
Wall pass-through Minimum 10" × 10" framed opening
Wall thickness adjustment range 3" minimum to 9" maximum
Minimum pipe insertion into the horizontal cap 1-1/4"
Shared vent Not permitted
Roof pitch Minimum vent height above the roof
Flat to 6/12 1 ft (0.3 m)
7/12 to 9/12 2 ft (0.6 m)
10/12 to 12/12 4 ft (1.2 m)
13/12 to 16/12 6 ft (1.8 m)
17/12 to 21/12 8 ft (2.4 m)

Vent termination clearances to windows, doors, soffits, corners, grade, decks, gas meters and regulators, air inlets and public walkways are published as a lettered figure in the current manual, with separate United States and Canada values for several of them. The manual also sets the restrictor plate position by vent configuration; this is an installer setting made at installation. Your HearthStone installer will select the vent components, the vent configuration, the restrictor setting and the termination location for your home.
