Product Features

Fireplace Integration

The Clydesdale 8492 installs into a masonry fireplace built to NFPA 211 standards, with a sealed block-off plate or plug of noncombustible material at the damper area to seal the chimney from room air. The current owner's manual states the insert should not be installed in a factory-built fireplace. A continuous chimney liner with a minimum diameter of 6" must extend from the insert to the top of the chimney, conforming to the class 3 requirements of chimney liner standards ULC-S635 or ULC-S640, connected positively to the insert's flue collar. The flue collar can be installed vertically or at 30 degrees to suit the position of the liner within the fireplace.

Included Blower

The convection blower is factory installed within the front ash lip and runs only when the insert is hot. A speed control wheel in the bottom center of the ash lip adjusts the blower, and the power cord can be routed to the left or right side of the insert during installation.

Included Surround

A cast iron surround kit ships on top of the insert, with surround panels, assembly hardware, and a surround mounting bracket. An optional surround extension covers an additional 6 inches of space beyond the standard surround, and optional cast iron surround base caps continue the lines of the ash lip and attach with magnets.

Firebox and Combustion

The firebox is lined with soapstone refractory bricks that absorb the heat of the fire and release it gradually. Above the secondary air tube, HearthStone's Thermo-Ceramic baffle system maintains high temperatures in the secondary combustion area, and two Applied Ceramics ACI-6M2 catalytic combustors provide tertiary combustion. A bypass door directs combustion products around the catalysts during startup and reloading, and a catalyst thermometer indicates the active range; the Clydesdale typically operates in the 800°F to 1300°F range.

Loading and Fire Viewing

The generous firebox depth and width allows loading of wood up to 22 inches long through a 22" wide by 11.5" high front door, and the large glass window presents an open view of the fire. The front door is reversible so it can be hinged on either the left or the right side.

Available Finishes and Configurations

The Clydesdale 8492 is currently orderable in two finishes, and every unit ships complete with the blower and surround. Pricing varies by finish.

Clearances and Hearth Requirements

The values below are from the current Clydesdale 8492 owner's and installation manual (revision 3/14/24) and the current HearthStone Clydesdale product page. The masonry fireplace must be built to NFPA 211 standards. Minimum fireplace dimensions shown are from the current HearthStone Clydesdale product page; the minimum fireplace dimensions figure in the current owner's manual governs installation and must be verified against the printed manual before installation. The mantel shield, kit 94-79700, is available to achieve shielded mantel clearances.

Installation Configuration Measurement Required Clearance or Dimension
All installations Minimum fireplace opening 32½" wide x 23¼" high x 13" deep; may taper to 27" wide x 21" high at the back wall
Combustible mantel, 8" deep From the bottom of the insert to the mantel 39½"
Shielded mantel with kit 94-79700, 8" deep From the bottom of the insert to the mantel 33⅜"
All installations To side trim, from the side of the insert body 8"
All installations To side wall, from the side of the insert body 11"

Hearth and floor protection

Combustible flooring must be protected with a covering of noncombustible material such as slate or marble tile. Insulation below the noncombustible material must be R1.5, or the bottom of the insert must be installed a minimum of 7" above hearth protection with R0 insulation (13.25" if measured from the bottom of the fuel loading opening). Masonry hearths 7" or higher require ember protection only.

Country Minimum Hearth Extension
United States 38" x 16"
Canada 47" x 18"

HearthStone notes that luxury vinyl plank and luxury vinyl tile flooring warrants extra consideration, as some products begin to warp at 110° Fahrenheit, and that additional shielding may be necessary depending on the flooring used. Clearances to combustible surfaces may be reduced using an NFPA 211 approved wall protection system.

Installation notice: Clearances and hearth requirements vary by fireplace construction, mantel depth, shielding, and installation configuration. Refer to the current Clydesdale 8492 installation manual and applicable local requirements before installation.

Warranty

HearthStone warrants the appliance to the original retail purchaser only, when purchased by that purchaser and installed by an authorized HearthStone dealer or their designated representative, against defects in material or workmanship. Coverage begins on the date of the original invoice and is not transferable to subsequent owners.

Warranty periods differ by component. HearthStone defines the term "Limited Lifetime" as 10 years from the beginning of warranty coverage, and applies it to the stone, to cast iron not listed elsewhere, and to the clean-burning air supply system. Door handles and latches and steel components and the firebox carry a 5-year period. Appliance electrical components carry a 2-year period. Enamel finish against peeling or fading, glass, the ash grate, accessories, and all components not listed elsewhere carry a 1-year period. The catalytic combustors are covered directly by the combustor manufacturer, Applied Ceramics, under a separate limited warranty that provides free replacement within two years of purchase and prorated replacement pricing thereafter.

HearthStone pays for warranty labor performed by an authorized dealer during the first year after the purchase date only when the appliance was installed by an authorized dealer or their designated representative; otherwise, and thereafter, labor is the purchaser's responsibility. Exclusions include over-firing, improper installation or operation, service by anyone other than an authorized dealer, use of unapproved fuels or components, water and corrosion damage, and normal wear parts such as paint, gaskets, baffles, refractory materials, ash grates, and glass. Surface and hairline cracks and scratches in the stone that do not affect operation or safety are excluded, and HearthStone's obligation does not extend to the appliance's ability to heat a desired space. Warranty registration is not required as a condition of coverage. Refer to the complete warranty in the current Clydesdale 8492 owner's manual for the full terms, conditions, and limitations.
