Product Features
Wood-Fired Cooking and Heat
The Deva is a freestanding wood cook stove, not a wood space heater and not a gas or electric range. A single cordwood fire in the 1.6 cu. ft. firebox heats the ceramic glass cooktop, the stainless-steel oven, and the room around it. The current owner's manual publishes a maximum heat output of 46,000 BTU/hr of cordwood, based on independent laboratory test results. The manual identifies the appliance as the Deva 100; HearthStone's current consumer material calls it the Deva. Both names refer to Model 8220.
2.5 Cu. Ft. Stainless-Steel Oven
The oven is constructed from stainless steel, is equipped with racks, and is described by HearthStone as large enough to cook a 20-pound turkey. Current HearthStone consumer material and the 2026 catalog publish the oven capacity as 2.5 cu. ft.; the current owner's manual prints 2.47 cu. ft. An analog oven thermometer is fitted to the oven door area so the cook can read oven temperature directly.
Vitreoceramic Cooking Surface
The cooktop is a vitreoceramic (ceramic glass) surface. HearthStone describes it as easy to clean, scratch resistant, and spacious enough for a number of pots and pans.
Adjustable Oven Temperature Control
A simple control regulates the amount of hot air circulating around the oven, which HearthStone presents as the means of holding a consistent baking temperature. Oven performance depends on fuel, draft, and how the stove is operated.
1.6 Cu. Ft. Firebox
The firebox holds 1.6 cu. ft. and accepts logs up to 17" long through a 7" × 9-3/4" fuel loading door. The current manual directs that natural wood only be burned and specifically prohibits kiln-dried wood, painted or treated wood, solvents, trash, plywood, colored or glossy paper, artificial logs, cardboard, coal, garbage and driftwood, along with gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, other liquid fuels and solid fire starters. A primary air control on the ash door regulates the air entering the firebox.
Flue Bypass System
The flue bypass is a handle at the top center of the stove that pushes in and pulls out. Opened, it gives flue gases a direct route out so the chimney heats and draft establishes faster on a cold start. Closed, hot gases travel their normal route around the oven. The current manual warns that burning the Deva 100 with the bypass open will not allow the oven to reach maximum temperatures.
Included Ash Pan
An ash pan sits under the fuel loading door and collects ash from the fire. It is reached through the ash door and slides out for emptying. The current manual directs that ashes be removed only when the stove is cold.
Top-or-Rear 6-Inch Venting
The Deva vents through a 6" diameter flue collar at either the top or the rear of the stove. The current manual gives the procedure for moving the collar to the rear exit and covering the top exit with the block-off plate. Choice of exit affects the published clearances and, for a horizontal connector, adds a floor-protection requirement beneath the connector.

Clearances and Hearth Requirements
The current Model 8220 manual is the governing source for every clearance and hearth requirement. The customer-readable side and rear clearances below come from HearthStone's current published summary; the manual's own lettered clearance table carries the complete set and must be used for installation planning. The Deva is to be installed as a freestanding cook stove.

Chimney connector clearance is a separate requirement and is not covered by the appliance clearances above. The current manual states that the single-wall connector clearances it shows are generic and that the double-wall clearances shown are specific to Simpson Dura-Vent DVL, and it directs the installer to check the specifications from the manufacturer of the connector actually used. A close-clearance connector pipe must be tested and listed to UL standards, and its own listing governs its clearances. The manual also notes that clearances to combustible surfaces may be reduced using an NFPA-approved wall protection system, referring the installer to NFPA 211 for specifications and complete details. Do not apply a protected-surface reduction to the base values above without following the manual and NFPA 211.
Floor protection is required. The following values come from the current Model 8220 manual and HearthStone's current published hearth-pad summary.
| Hearth and floor protection |
Requirement |
| Required thermal protection |
R-value of at least 0.89, or a UL-listed floor protector |
| Extension beyond the fuel loading door — United States |

| Extension beyond the fuel loading door — Canada |
18" (46 cm) |
| Extension beyond each side of the cook stove |

| Overall pad depth — United States |
39-3/4" |
| Overall pad depth — Canada |
41-3/4" |
| Rear-exit / horizontal connector installations |
Floor protection must be installed beneath the connector and extend 2" beyond each side of the connector |
The manual gives R-value conversion formulas for floor protectors specified by K-factor or C-factor, and allows the R-values of multiple layers to be added. Confirm the final assembly with your installer, local code, and the authority having jurisdiction.
Alcove Installation
Unlike several other HearthStone appliances, the Deva has published alcove installation requirements. The manual's alcove clearance table is printed for the top-exit connector configuration.
| Alcove requirement |
Value |
| Maximum alcove depth |
48" |
| Minimum alcove height |
96" |
| Minimum alcove width, single-wall connector |
63" |
| Minimum alcove width, double-wall connector |
58" |
The alcove clearances themselves are published in the manual as a lettered table with separate single-wall and double-wall connector columns. Consult the current Model 8220 manual's alcove table for the full connector-specific requirements before planning an alcove installation.
Chimney and Venting Requirements
The Deva requires a 6" inside diameter flue for a new installation. An existing 8" diameter flue may be used with a reducer. A prefabricated metal chimney must be Type HT (2100°F), listed to UL 103 or ULC S629. A lined masonry chimney may also be used; the manual specifies brick or modular block at least 4" thick or a rubble or stone wall at least 12" thick, a flue liner at least 5/8" thick installed with refractory mortar and at least a 1" air space, at least 2" clearance to combustible structure inside the building and at least 1" outside it, and identifies an 8" × 8" tile flue as the size that gives best results. Have an existing masonry chimney professionally inspected before installation and make sure the cleanout is functional and sealed.
Minimum chimney height is 13 ft and maximum chimney height is 30 ft. The Deva requires a draft between 0.06" w.c. and 0.10" w.c.; for drafts above 0.10" w.c. the manual requires a stovepipe damper. Horizontal runs of stovepipe must rise away from the stove a minimum of 1/4" per foot. Do not connect this stove to a chimney serving another appliance. The chimney must terminate at least 3 ft higher than the highest part of the roof opening and at least 2 ft higher than any part of the roof within 10 ft.
