The Waitsfield (Model 8771) is a freestanding direct vent gas stove with an enameled or painted cast-iron body, a steel pan burner and a maximum input of 33,000 BTU/hr.

Product Features

SIT Nova 821 Millivolt Control with 7-Day Pilot Timeout

The Waitsfield uses a SIT Nova 821 gas control valve. The thermopile generates the millivolt supply that powers the valve, so the appliance itself does not depend on household current to operate. HearthStone specifies a thermopile output of 325 to 500 millivolts. The valve extinguishes the pilot after 7 days without a call for heat, a feature HearthStone describes as meeting the requirements of states and municipalities that do not permit continuously burning pilots. The owner's manual warns that the timer system must not be defeated or modified.

Battery-Powered Continuous Sparker for Pilot Ignition

The pilot is lit by a continuous spark igniter connected to the pilot assembly, powered by a single AA battery housed in a sparker box mounted below the stove. The spark begins as the gas control knob is pressed in at the pilot position. HearthStone directs that the appliance must not be lit by a match or by any means other than the supplied ignition system, and recommends replacing the battery each season.

Manual, Thermostat or Optional Remote Operation

The Waitsfield can be run manually at the gas control valve, with a wall-mounted 750 millivolt thermostat, or with an optional remote control kit. The thermostat is not supplied with the appliance. A variable output control on the gas valve adjusts heat output between the published minimum and maximum inputs, so a low flame setting gives longer burn cycles at reduced output and a high setting gives a shorter, hotter cycle.

Steel Pan Burner, Five-Piece Log Set and Ember Media

Model 8771 is published with a steel pan burner. The stove ships with a five-piece decorative ceramic log set packed separately, a bag of Platinum Bright Embers and a bag of ceramic nuggets. The manual specifies an exact log and ember placement sequence, which is required for a correct flame pattern and clean combustion.

Integral Cast-Iron Heat Exchanger

A cast-iron heat exchanger is integral to the appliance. HearthStone describes its purpose as moving heat from the fire into the room rather than up the chimney.

Integral Safety Barrier Screen

The Waitsfield includes a safety barrier screen as an integral part of the appliance. The screens are mechanically affixed to the inside surface of the front and side castings, and HearthStone requires that a damaged barrier be replaced with the manufacturer's barrier for this appliance before the stove is operated.

Natural Gas as Shipped, Propane with the Included Kit

The Waitsfield is factory equipped to burn natural gas. A propane conversion kit is included with the appliance and must be installed by qualified service personnel before the stove is operated on propane. Maximum input is 32,500 BTU/hr on natural gas and 33,000 BTU/hr on propane, with minimum inputs of 17,500 BTU/hr and 18,500 BTU/hr respectively. The Model 8771 rating label publishes the same maximum ratings at 0 to 2,000 ft and at 2,000 to 4,500 ft, and the manual states that the de-rating gas suppliers typically apply above 2,000 ft is not necessary with the Waitsfield.

Optional Blower and Optional Remote

A convection blower and two remote control options are optional on Model 8771 and are sold separately. None of them is included with the appliance. The blower mounts below the stove, is switched on automatically by a snap switch once the stove body reaches temperature, and is speed-adjusted with a rheostat. The blower requires household current; the appliance itself operates on its own millivolt system.

Direct Vent Installation

The Waitsfield is a direct vent appliance using a 4" x 6-5/8" vent with a top outlet at the stove. HearthStone approves two venting configurations for this model: vertical venting with vertical termination, and vertical venting with horizontal termination. Vent components must come from an approved manufacturer and must not be mixed between manufacturers within the same venting system.

Approved for Mobile Home Installation

Model 8771 is approved for installation in an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home in the United States where not prohibited by local codes, and the rating label is marked certified for mobile home installation. The rating label is also marked certified for Canada.

Made in the USA

The Model 8771 rating label identifies HearthStone QHHP, Inc. of Morrisville, Vermont as the manufacturer and is marked Made in USA.

Clearances and Floor Protection

The values below are minimum clearances to combustibles published for Model 8771. They are minimum distances in all cases. The installer is responsible for assessing the combustible materials in the actual installation, and the installation must also meet local codes and the requirements of the gas supplier.

Appliance Clearances to Combustibles

HearthStone notes that the governing rear clearance is set by either the appliance's minimum clearance or the vent pipe's minimum clearance, depending on whether the installation uses vertical rise within the room or a rear exit through-the-wall vent. Allow for access to the gas control valve access door on the front of the unit, for periodic cleaning and servicing, and for the blower assembly if one is present or planned.

Hearth and Floor Protection

The Waitsfield may be placed directly on any non-combustible surface or on a wood floor. On any other combustible surface a panel of metal, wood, stone or glass must be installed under the appliance, extending the full width and depth of the appliance. Installations must meet all local codes.

Where the stove is installed in a room with luxury vinyl plank or luxury vinyl tile flooring, HearthStone notes that some LVP and LVT flooring begins to warp at 110 degrees Fahrenheit, that each installation and flooring specification is different, and that additional shielding to prevent warping may be necessary depending on the flooring used. HearthStone directs the installer to consult the flooring manufacturer for maximum temperature recommendations. The Model 8771 manual does not publish a numeric stove-to-flooring distance for LVP or LVT.

Direct Vent Requirements

Two venting configurations are approved for Model 8771: vertical venting with vertical termination, and vertical venting with horizontal termination.

• Vertical termination requires at least 10 ft of vertical pipe.
• Maximum vertical run is 35 ft.
• Elbows in vertical terminations are limited to a maximum of two 90-degree or four 45-degree elbows, and HearthStone recommends 45-degree elbows wherever possible because they offer less restriction to the flue gases.
• Horizontal termination requires a minimum 36" rise directly off the heater, unless a minimum 14" snorkel is used, in which case a 24" vertical rise is required directly off the heater.
• Minimum horizontal run is 9" and the maximum horizontal run is 10 ft, provided a 1/4" rise is provided for every 12" of horizontal run.
• For each 90-degree elbow after the second, remove 5 ft from the allowable horizontal run. For Canadian installations, remove 4 ft.
• Wall penetrations require a minimum 10" x 10" square hole, with the vent positioned to maintain 2" minimum clearance at the top and 1" minimum clearance to combustible materials around the other sides.
• Termination caps must be no less than 18" horizontally from any roof or vertical surface.
• A listed fire stop is required at any floor penetration, framed according to the venting manufacturer's instructions.
• Vinyl siding requires a vinyl siding stand-off, and the termination cap must not be recessed into the wall or siding.
• The vent restrictor setting must follow the venting termination chart published in the manual for the vertical rise and horizontal run actually installed.

Vent Terminal Location Requirements

Terminal placement is governed by the acceptable direct vent terminal locations published for this model. United States and Canadian requirements differ, and HearthStone publishes recommendations that exceed several of the code minimums. Both are shown below. Review these with your installer before selecting a termination point.

HearthStone publishes the following conditions with the table above. Values marked as United States minimums are in accordance with the current ANSI Z223.1 / NFPA 54 National Fuel Gas Code, and local codes and regulations may require different clearances. Values marked for Canada are in accordance with CSA B149 installation codes. A vent must not terminate directly above a sidewalk or driveway which is located between two single family dwellings and serves both dwellings. Clearance M applies only where the veranda, porch, deck or balcony is fully open on a minimum of two sides beneath the floor.

Chimney Installations

Model 8771 is approved for use with direct vent chimney conversion kits in masonry or prefabricated solid fuel listed chimneys. The termination must fall within the manual's venting termination chart. A masonry chimney must have a fireclay liner or a listed steel liner present for the entire length of the chimney. A prefabricated chimney must be UL103 or ULC S-629 listed, must have a minimum inside diameter of 6", and must be listed for the specific manufacturer's conversion kit. The maximum vertical length of vent is 35 ft and the liner must have an inside dimension or diameter of 6" or greater. HearthStone notes that the use of an existing chimney as an air intake is not listed under the ANSI Z21.88 / CSA 2.33-2019 test methods, and that this installation has been tested and approved by PFS-TECO Laboratories with an appropriate test; the code authority having jurisdiction must be consulted before proceeding with this installation method.

Vent kits and components are supplied separately. Only venting components from the manufacturers approved by HearthStone for this appliance may be used, and components from different manufacturers must not be mixed within the same venting system.

The safety barrier screens, the cast-iron heat exchanger and the SIT Nova 821 gas control system are integral to the appliance. Vent kits and vent components are supplied separately and are not included with the stove. A convection blower and the remote control kits are optional and are not included. A wall thermostat is not supplied with the appliance.

Warranty

The Waitsfield is covered by HearthStone's limited manufacturer warranty as printed in the current Model 8771 owner's manual, which defines its Limited Lifetime coverage as 10 years from the beginning of warranty coverage. For gas appliances the manual's warranty table covers cast iron not listed elsewhere under Limited Lifetime; door handles and latches, steel components and firebox, and burner and logs for 5 years; appliance electrical and gas components and refractory, vermiculite panels and baffles for 2 years; and enamel finish against peeling or fading, accessories, glass and all components not listed elsewhere for 1 year. Warranty labor is covered during the first year only, and only where the appliance was installed by an authorized dealer or their designated representative. The warranty extends to the original retail purchaser and is not transferrable. The manual notes that online registration is not required as a condition of warranty coverage. Coverage applies only to components present on this appliance. Exclusions, eligibility and claim requirements are governed by the warranty as printed in the manual supplied with the appliance.
